Private finance in Mumbai
Private finance in Mumbai means borrowing from an NBFC registered with the Reserve Bank of India or from a money lender licensed under Maharashtra law, usually when a bank cannot help, or cannot help in time. It costs more than a bank loan and the terms are shorter, so the lender you choose matters. Atlanta Group helps people across Mumbai compare options from the registered providers we work with and understand every term before signing. The provider decides on every application, and approval is never guaranteed.
Who looks at private finance in Mumbai
In Mumbai we hear most often from salaried people stretched by housing and living costs, traders and small business owners who need working capital for a few weeks or months, and families with an urgent bill that cannot wait for a bank. What they share is a real need and a way to repay. What they risk is a lender found through a forwarded number, with nothing in writing.
The rules in Mumbai
Maharashtra's money-lending law applies in Mumbai: a money lender needs a yearly licence for a named area and must display it where they do business, and the state limits the interest a licensed lender may charge. NBFCs answer to the Reserve Bank of India instead, and their registration can be checked on RBI's list or its Sachet portal. Ask whoever is lending which of the two they are, and for proof.
Using Mumbai property as security
Most Mumbai flats sit in co-operative housing societies, so a lender taking a flat as security usually asks for the society's no-objection certificate to mortgage it and for the share certificate; the society checks your dues and any existing loan first. Pagdi property is held on tenancy rights rather than ownership, so lenders generally cannot accept it. Whatever you pledge is at risk if repayments are missed. Our Loan Against Property page explains the bank and NBFC route, which often costs less.
How Atlanta Group helps
First we hear what the money is for and go through your credit report together, because a bank or NBFC may still say yes. If private finance is the better fit, we compare two to three registered options on rate, tenure, security, charges and total repayment, check the documents a lender will ask for, and go through the terms line by line before you sign. You can reach us by phone, on WhatsApp or, by appointment, at our Malad West office. Our Private Finance Loan page explains the full process, costs and timeline.

Frequently asked questions
Can I find money lenders in Mumbai who lend without collateral?
Some registered providers lend without security, based on your income and credit record, usually for smaller amounts and shorter terms. Larger amounts, or a weaker profile, generally need security or a co-applicant. Treat any offer of a large unsecured loan with no checks as a warning sign.
Can I get private finance against a flat in a housing society?
Often, yes, if the flat is in your name and the society will issue a no-objection certificate. Keep your share certificate, maintenance receipts and the registered agreement ready, and clear any society dues first, because the society checks them before issuing the certificate.
Can I borrow against a pagdi property in Mumbai?
Usually not. A pagdi occupant holds tenancy rights, not ownership, so most lenders cannot take the property as security. An unsecured loan, a co-applicant, or other property you own outright may be options instead.
A lender wants my original property papers. Is that normal?
For a secured loan, lenders often keep the original title documents until the loan is repaid. Hand them over only to a registered lender, against a written acknowledgement that lists every document, and keep copies. Ask how and when they will be returned once you repay.
Can private finance cover a short cash gap in my Mumbai business?
It can, if the money you are waiting for, such as a customer payment, is reliable and the cost is clear in writing. Check what happens if the payment is late, because extending a short-term loan quickly adds to the cost. A bank overdraft or working-capital limit may suit a recurring gap better; our Business Loan page explains those.
