What types of loans can you get in India?
Most loans fall into two families. Unsecured loans, such as a personal loan or most business loans, need no security, so lenders rely on your income and credit record; they are usually quicker to arrange but cost more. Secured loans, such as a home loan or a loan against property, are backed by an asset, so they usually cost less and run longer, but the asset is at risk if repayments are missed. Beyond that, loans are named for their purpose, and if you already have a loan, a balance transfer or top-up can improve it.
Secured or unsecured: how to choose
If you own property and need a larger amount over a longer period, a secured loan usually costs less, but you are putting the property behind the loan, so missed repayments can put it at risk. If the amount is smaller or the need is short, an unsecured loan avoids pledging anything, at a higher cost. Many people should not pledge their home for a need that an unsecured loan, or a little patience, could meet.
Choosing the right loan for your need
Start with what the money is for and how you will repay it. Match the tenure to the life of the need: a short need deserves a short loan, and equipment should be paid off before it wears out. Then compare total cost rather than the monthly EMI, because a longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises the interest you pay. Our eligibility check and EMI Calculator help you test the numbers first.
Balance transfer or top-up?
A balance transfer moves your existing loan to another lender, usually for a lower rate or better terms, and is worth it only if the saving is larger than the costs of switching. A top-up gives you extra money on a loan you are already repaying, often with less paperwork than a new loan. Both are available on personal loans, home loans, loans against property and business loans; each has its own page above.

Frequently asked questions
Which loan has the lowest interest rate?
Secured loans, such as home loans and loans against property, usually cost less than unsecured personal or business loans, because the lender has an asset behind the loan. Your own rate depends on the lender, your income, credit record and the loan itself, so compare the Key Fact Statements for your case.
Which loan is the easiest to get?
There is no easy loan, only one that fits your profile. A loan backed by security or a co-applicant is often easier to get approved than an unsecured one, and the lender that holds your salary account may know you best. Be wary of anyone promising a loan with no checks at all.
Can I get a loan without collateral?
Yes. Personal loans, most business loans and smaller education loans are unsecured, and some government schemes help small businesses borrow without collateral. Lenders then rely more on your income and credit record, and the cost is usually higher than a secured loan.
Can I have more than one loan at a time?
Yes, if your income can carry all the EMIs. Lenders add up what you already pay each month before approving a new loan, so existing EMIs reduce how much more you can borrow. If several EMIs are already a strain, combining them may help more than another loan.
Should I take a personal loan or a loan against property?
A personal loan is quicker and puts nothing at risk, but it costs more and runs for a shorter time. A loan against property usually costs less and allows a larger amount over a longer tenure, but your property is at risk if you cannot repay. The size of the need and how long you need to repay usually decide it.
How do I know which loan I am eligible for?
Start with our eligibility check, which estimates what you may be able to borrow from your income and existing EMIs. For a fuller picture, ask us for a free check of your profile: we look at what a lender will see and tell you honestly which options are realistic.
